Planning future energy systems with high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE) requires a deep understanding of spatial and temporal correlations across entire continents. CorRES (Correlations in Renewable Energy Sources) is an open-source data processing and modelling tool created to meet exactly this challenge.
During the webinar, the Mopo partner Matti Koivisto from DTU introduced CorRES, explaining how it supports long-term system planning and advanced energy modelling.
CorRES generates high-resolution wind and solar time series at continental scale by combining meteorological datasets, downscaling methods, and stochastic simulation. Its intuitive web interface ensures global accessibility. It is applied in ENTSO-E’s PECD dataset, TYNDP and ERAA studies, and by system operators such as Energinet. Internationally, it has been used in Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Japan.
By bridging meteorology and power system modelling, CorRES helps design reliable, cost-efficient and climate-resilient energy systems for the energy transition.
