CorRES for Creating PECD Data for ENTSO-E

Tool used:
Sectoral scope:
  • Electricity
Geographical scope:
  • Extended European area

Context

The CorRES tool simulates wind power generation time series for the ENTSO-E*’s Pan-European Climate Database (PECD). Based on ERA5 reanalysis data and different climate projections, it applies advanced statistical downscaling based on the Global Wind Atlas and generic power curves with detailed wake-loss modelling, producing realistic hourly wind generation profiles across Europe. The approach ensures full spatial consistency with ENTSO-E’s PECD zones and temporal fidelity for long-term investment and adequacy analysis. The resulting dataset supports grid adequacy studies, renewable integration studies and scenario planning by providing harmonized, reproducible wind generation estimates derived from reanalysis data and climate projections.

This is an external use case of Mopo tools implementation.

Scope

It covers Europe, providing pan-European wind generation datasets for grid adequacy and renewable integration studies.

Results and conclusions

The resulting dataset undergoes validation against historical generation data where available, confirming its robustness for long-term scenario and adequacy studies. Key performance indicators such as capacity factors, correlation structures, and ramping characteristics are examined to ensure realistic behaviour across different regions. The PECD data are used in ENTSO-E’s major studies, including the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) and the European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA).

In TYNDP, the data underpin future grid expansion scenarios by providing credible renewable generation patterns under varying weather and climate conditions. This enables network planners to evaluate transmission needs, congestion risks, and investment priorities in a system increasingly dominated by variable renewables. For ERAA, the dataset supports adequacy assessments by capturing the temporal and spatial variability of wind generation and its interaction with solar, demand and other resources. This is vital for identifying potential adequacy issues and designing appropriate mitigation measures.
